Sports in Toronto has a long and distinguished history. The city is home to a few historic clubs such as: Granite Club (est. 1836), the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (est. 1852), the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club (est. pre-1827), the Argonaut Rowing Club (est. 1872), Toronto Argonauts football club (est. 1873), the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club (est. 1881), and the Badminton and Racquet Club (est. 1924).

Toronto has teams in nearly every major professional sport, including the Toronto Blue Jays (MLB), Toronto Argonauts (CFL), Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto Rock (NLL), Toronto FC (MLS), and the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL). Throughout the sports world, Toronto is perhaps best known for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although Toronto has not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, the city is undoubtedly renowned as a hockey town, and is sometimes referred to as the "Centre of the Hockey Universe", both disparagingly and as a compliment.

Sports And Recreation In Toronto

BMO Field is a Canadian soccer stadium located in Exhibition Place in the city of Toronto. The open-air structure can seat up to 21,140 spectators, depending on seating configurations. It opened on April 28, 2007.

The Air Canada Centre (ACC) is a multi-purpose indoor sporting arena located on Bay Street in Downtown Toronto. The arena is popularly known as the ACC or the Hangar (the latter nickname came from its sponsorship by Air Canada).


Rogers Centre (formerly known as SkyDome) is a multi-purpose stadium, in Downtown Toronto, situated next to the CN Tower, near the shores of Lake Ontario. The venue was noted for being the first stadium to have a fully retractable motorized roof.

Ricoh Coliseum is an ice hockey and agricultural arena at Exhibition Place in Toronto. It serves as the home arena of the Toronto Marlies, the American Hockey League farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Initially known as the Civic Arena, the building had its official public opening on December 16, 1921.

Spectator Sports

The Honda Indy Toronto is an annual IndyCar Series race, held in Toronto, originally known as the Molson Indy Toronto. The track has 11 turns, is a 2.824-kilometre (1.755 mi) street circuit, and is located at Exhibition Place.

Woodbine Racetrack is a racetrack for Thoroughbred horse races located at 555 Rexdale Blvd. in the city of Toronto, Ontario. It is the only horseracing track in North America which stages, or is capable of staging, thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing programs on the same day.

The Canadian Open (also known as the Canada Masters), currently sponsored as the Rogers Cup, is an annual tennis tournament held at the Rexall Centre, York University. The men's and women's competition alternate from year-to-year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto.

The 2015 Pan American Games, officially the XVII Pan American Games or the 17th Pan American Games, is a major international multi-sport event that is scheduled to be held from July 10–26, 2015 in Toronto. The 2015 Pan American Games will be the first completely green Games. Staging them will be done in a carbon-neutral way and become the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Canada.

City of Toronto Golf Courses

Toronto's 5 public golf courses are a challenge for players of every skill level. Green fees are reasonable. Easily accessible by public transit and open everyday from mid-April to mid-November, it's easy to make a round part of your day.

Public sites are completely free and available to the general public at all times. Nets are provided by the City of Toronto. Participants are requested to line up and play for half hour intervals. Public tennis courts are available in parks across Toronto. and open from April to October (weather permitting).

LEAF is a non-profit group dedicated to the protection and improvement of Toronto's urban forest. Present activities focus on a residential tree planting program within the City of Toronto.We envision a city that is healthier because every citizen cares for the urban forest.

Public Bicycles System Company (BIXI Toronto) has provided the City of Toronto with a network of bikes throughout the downtown core. BIXI Docking terminals allow users to pick up, and drop off bicycles from location to location, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
