On January 1st 1998 Toronto, East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and York were combined into one single municipality, becoming the 5th most populous megacity in North America (after Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago respectively).

Outside of Toronto not many people ever realized that places like Etobicoke or Scarborough were separate entities to begin with. To them they were always just Toronto's suburbs. But to the residents of these places they were unique communities with their own histories and cultures. They still are. The Toronto boroughs have so far retained their individual character. As a matter of fact, Toronto is best described as a big city made up of wonderful and distinct neighbourhoods. Some of them can be described as 'ethnic', while others are reflecting a particular lifestyle.

Toronto is heralded as one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Over 100 languages and dialects are spoken in Toronto, and one third of Toronto residents speak a language other than English at home. Foreign-born residents comprise more than 50 per cent of the population. Hence, Toronto is proudly calling itself "The World Within A City".

Toronto is being recognized as among the top ten most economically powerful cities in the world, together with London, Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Chicago, Seoul, Paris, Los Angeles, and Shanghai. However, contrary to the other cities mentioned above, Toronto does not show up in the list of 50 of the world’s most expensive cities to live in.
