CITY OF NEIGHBOURHOODS
THE WORLD WITHIN A CITY
On January 1st 1998 Toronto, East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and York were combined into one single municipality, becoming the 5th most populous megacity in North America (after Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago respectively).

Outside of Toronto not many people ever realized that places like Etobicoke or Scarborough were separate entities to begin with. To them they were always just Toronto's suburbs. But to the residents of these places they were unique communities with their own histories and cultures. They still are. The Toronto boroughs have so far retained their individual character. As a matter of fact, Toronto is best described as a big city made up of wonderful and distinct neighbourhoods. Some of them can be described as 'ethnic', while others are reflecting a particular lifestyle.

Toronto is heralded as one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Over 100 languages and dialects are spoken in Toronto, and one third of Toronto residents speak a language other than English at home. Foreign-born residents comprise more than 50 per cent of the population. Hence, Toronto is proudly calling itself "The World Within A City".
WHAT ARE THOSE MOOSE DOING IN TORONTO?
button Moose In The CityMOOSE IN THE CITY
In the Summer of 2000, Moose in the City, transformed the entire megacity into a wonderful outdoor art "moose-eum", with more than 325 fantastic moose sculptures on display for all to see. With the completion of Great Moose Auction in January 2001, Moose in the City, Toronto's phenomenally successful outdoor art event, also drew to a close. Although the exhibition is now over, Toronto's beloved metropolitan moose are far from gone and definitely not forgotten! The legacy of Moose in the City lives on in the smiles the moose continue to bring to the faces of children and adults alike as they continue to pop up in the most unexpected places. Since not everyone may be familiar with the distinguishing features and unique habits of this new breed of city moose, a visit to the Moose In the City website will be an elucidating expedition.
