Markham is the largest of nine communities in York Region with a population of approximately 220,000, and a land area of 211.53 square kilometres.
Markham is a blend of four communities - Markham, Unionville, Milliken and Thornhill and is located just north of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. It is a growing community with new housing developments and businesses, quality schools, parks and recreational areas. As such it is a mixture of small town, with some farms in the area, and large town with corporate head offices such as IBM and American Express. Markham is also well known as "Canada's HIGH-TECH Capital" for the technology companies.
What sets Markham apart is its well planned attractive streetscapes, residential sub-divisions, business parks and its natural spaces. Markham truly offers the perfect combination of business and lifestyle. The former 'Village of Markham' itself provides an historic setting for lovely 19th century homes. A stroll along Main St., recently refurbished with interlocking brick, gaslight street lamps and planters, brings you to antique stores, village shops and a variety of restaurants. A five-minute drive away is Milne Dam, a 100-acre park with trees and a pond, used by the community for firework displays and barbecues.

![]() Unionville is a perfect blend of the past and the present, with a wonderful selection of shops, restaurants and galleries. The historical storefronts and residential properties of historical significance also make Unionville an excellent place to spend the day. The appeal of Unionville also continues to be a popular venue for filmshoots. Whether you decide to stroll through the park and sit by the stream while you watch the water fountain or stroll down Main Street as you browse through shops, you will always find lots to do in Unionville.
The origins of the village goes back to 1794 when a group of settlers of German origin settled along the banks of the Rouge River in Markham. In 1854, the village was officially named Unionville, possibly in honour of the Act of Union of 1841 uniting Upper and Lower Canada.
