![]() The Ajax Sportsplex opened in August 2002, and will see
its first full season starting in spring 2003.
![]() Ajax takes great pride in its Lake Ontario waterfront, which is the longest undeveloped waterfront in the Toronto area. With many kilometres of walking and bike trails along with park land, the waterfront is well used. Ajax has over 465 acres of parkland and natural areas throughout the town, including many small neighbourhood parks. Many of the parks include naturalized areas, where natural vegetation is allowed to thrive.

In 1941, the rolling farmland east of Toronto (then part of Pickering Township) became the location of one of the largest Allied defence plants of World War II, Defence Industries Limited (DIL). People came from throughout Canada to work at the plant, and a community quickly took root in the area.
As the community grew, a name was needed. The first naval victory of the war had been in 1939 at the Battle of the River Plate off Uruguay. The HMS Ajax and her sister ships routed the German battleship the Graf Spee. The name Ajax became famous, and it was chosen to represent the war-born community.
As the Town developed, a majority of its roads were named for the crew and officers of the ship. Today, a simple glance at a street sign is a glance at history. Streets named for crew of the HMS Ajax are noted with a street sign that includes a small battleship in silhouette. Whenever an HMS Ajax sailor or family member visits, a tree is dedicated on "his" street.
Ajax has grown quickly over the years to become a vibrant, diverse community of about 76,000. With its lovely World War II neighbourhoods as well as newer subdivisions of varying designs, an open and inviting lakefront and extensive trail and parks system, historic areas, and popular retail opportunities, Ajax has become an attractive location in the Greater Toronto Area.
